10 Tips to Manage Your Blood Pressure

1. Know It
Everyone should know his or her blood pressure. Most grocery stores and pharmacies have blood pressure machines that are free to the public. Or you can buy a gauge to keep at your home. The goal? Blood pressure should be less than 140/90. If it goes higher than this, seek treatment.

2. Treat It
Take your high blood pressure medicine, every day, if prescribed.

3. Lose It
Extra weight increases your risk of high blood pressure. Determine if you need to lose weight by calculating your body mass index or BMI.

4. Move It
Exercise is key to managing your blood pressure. Walk, run, bike, dance, garden…use it or lose it! 30 minutes most days of the week will improve your numbers.

5. Cut It
Pick foods low in salt and sodium. Most Americans should consume no more than 2.4 grams of sodium a day; if you have high blood pressure, your doctor may advise less.

6. Add It
You can reduce your blood pressure by eating foods that are low in fat and high fiber, such as fruits, vegetables and lowfat dairy. Also recommended are whole grains, poultry, fish and nuts.

7. Moderate It
Consume alcohol in moderate amounts – one drink a day for women, two for men.

8. Don’t Do It
Avoid tobacco and second hand smoke. Nicotine can raise your blood pressure by 10 points for up to an hour after you smoke.

9. Reduce It
Stress can also raise your blood pressure. You should take steps to avoid it, or at least copy with it in a healthy way.
