10 Tips to Manage Your Thyroid

1. Check It.
Cold weather can increase your body’s need for thyroid hormone, and may cause your TSH to rise. You may need to adjust your medication seasonally.

2. Tune It.
Different patients feel better at different TSH levels. Discuss your level with your Nurse Practitioner to see what suits you best.

3. Treat It.
Make sure you’re on the right drug that safely relieves the majority of your hypothyroidism symptoms.
There are several different types of drugs available. Work with your Nurse Practitioner to find the right one for you.

4. Move It.
Exercise can help you manage your weight and relieve your stress, both key helping you feel better.

5. Get some sunlight every day.
Exposure to sunlight may affect hormones that have an impact on both brain chemistry and the endocrine system. Twenty to thirty minutes a day of outdoor light exposure can help ward off fatigue and depression.

6. Eat less sugar.
Many people with thyroid conditions find that they are susceptible to processed sugar. Weight gain and depression are both factors that can be affected by too much sugar in the diet so it makes sense to pass up the cookies.

7. Get Your ZZZs.
Autoimmune conditions, hormonal imbalances and difficulty losing weight are all aggravated by insufficient sleep. How much do you need? Seven to eight hours.

8. Reduce It.
With work, families, activities and other stressors everywhere, it is critical for your health to incorporate a form of stress reduction into your daily activities. This can vary by person, just find something that works for you.

9. Avoid It.
Catching the flu can aggravate thyroid conditions. Be sure to get your seasonal flu shot. Wash your hands, cover your sneezes, get fresh air – take steps to avoid contagion.
